UK guide
Corporate Social Responsibility in the UK
CSR is not a single UK statute that every small business must publish. It still shows up constantly: tenders, supplier questionnaires, and government social-value scoring. This guide answers what corporate social responsibility means for UK businesses, what the data says about the market, and how to turn that into a policy buyers will accept.

Key takeaways
- For most SMEs, CSR is a commercial ask (buyers and portals), not a one-size legal filing.
- Larger UK entities already face modern slavery and energy/carbon reporting rules that cascade into supply-chain questions.
- A credible UK CSR policy is specific: environment, people, ethics, supply chain, community, plus ownership and review.
- Company disclosure benchmarks describe reporters, not a target every SME should invent.
Is CSR legally required in the UK?
There is no general rule that every UK SME must publish a "CSR policy". What exists instead is a patchwork: directors' duties under the Companies Act 2006 (including regard to stakeholders and the environment), the Modern Slavery Act 2015 for larger entities, and Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) for qualifying companies. Smaller suppliers meet CSR when a customer, framework or portal asks for evidence.
UK government procurement also pushes social value. That is adjacent to CSR: buyers look for community, workforce and environmental commitments, not a slogan. If you need a fillable outline rather than the UK framing, use our CSR policy template. For the Australia angle, see corporate social responsibility in Australia.
Frameworks UK buyers recognise
You do not need all of these. Pick what matches your size and the questionnaire in front of you.
| What it covers | Who feels it | |
|---|---|---|
| Companies Act 2006 (s.172) | Directors must have regard to stakeholders and impact | Companies; shapes how boards talk about responsibility |
| Modern Slavery Act 2015 | Transparency in supply chains for qualifying entities | Large businesses, and anyone in their supply chain |
| SECR | Energy and carbon reporting for qualifying companies | Larger UK incorporated entities |
| Social value / ESG questionnaires | Procurement and portal checks | SMEs bidding or onboarding as suppliers |
UK country context
Sovereign indicators set the backdrop buyers assume when they ask about environment and workforce.
- CO₂ emissions per capita
- 4.2 t2024
- Renewable energy share
- 12.2%2021
- Female labour force participation
- 57.3%2025
- Income inequality (Gini)
- 32.42021
Lower intensity than many peers, but energy and carbon still dominate large-buyer questionnaires.
Share of final energy use.
Workplace and inclusion topics sit next to environment on many CSR packs.
Index scale: 0 = equal.
Basis: United Kingdom, latest available sovereign indicators
What that means for a UK CSR document
Unlike high-intensity economies where emissions dominate the opening paragraph, a UK policy usually needs a balanced mix: energy and waste you control, fair work, ethical conduct, and supply-chain diligence. Vague "we care about sustainability" lines fail social-value and portal reviews for the same reason they fail everywhere else: they are not checkable.
What UK companies disclose
Open company data shows how reporting looks among firms that publish numbers for the United Kingdom.
- Scope 1 emissions (median)
- 10,014 t CO2e2024
- Scope 2 emissions (median)
- 15,147 t CO2e2023
- Environmental fines (median)
- 02023
Many reporters show zero; the upper tail is large (p90 well above £0).
Basis: Median of latest value per company; Scope 1 n=159, Scope 2 n=142, environmental fines n=64
How to use those disclosure figures
The samples skew to larger reporters. They explain why tenders ask about emissions and environmental compliance. They are not a script for a ten-person consultancy to invent a carbon inventory. Name what you actually track, and one improvement you can defend.
Write a UK CSR policy that survives a portal check
Same job whether the ask is labelled CSR, ESG or social value.
- 1
Collect evidence you already have
H&S policy, waste contracts, living-wage or fair-pay stance, anti-bribery, modern slavery due diligence, volunteering or local spend.
- 2
Structure under clear headings
Environment, people, ethics, supply chain, community, governance and review.
- 3
Add one concrete commitment each
Prefer something observable over a values paragraph.
- 4
Reference UK law only where true
Modern Slavery Act or SECR if you are in scope or cascade requirements from customers. Do not claim filings you do not make.
- 5
Sign, date, and upload
Director or owner sign-off and an annual review date. One to two pages is enough for most SME portal uploads.
