Corporate Social Responsibility in South Africa
In South Africa you will hear both CSR and CSI (corporate social investment). Buyers and communities often mean development spend and workplace responsibility, not a slogan. This guide covers the language, what is required, the country data, and how to document a programme that is not a paste of a listed retailer's report.

CSR vs CSI in South African practice
CSR is the broader responsibility framing (environment, people, ethics, community). CSI usually points at social investment projects: education, health, enterprise development, community infrastructure. Many South African questionnaires use the words interchangeably. Answer with both: how you operate, and what you invest in locally.
Brand case studies (retailers, OEMs, telcos) are poor templates for SMEs. Use the CSR policy template and fill it with your own projects.
Is CSI or CSR mandatory in South Africa?
There is no single SME-wide CSR Act that forces every small business to publish a statement. Related duties and expectations appear in B-BBEE practice, sector charters, mining and licensing contexts, and large-buyer procurement. For most suppliers the trigger is commercial: a customer or portal asks for CSR/CSI evidence.
